The number of pertussis (whooping cough) cases in New Mexico is on the rise.

As of June 29, 2012 there were 266 confirmed and probable cases of pertussis reported to the Department of Health.  This is as many cases as was reported in all of 2011.  To date, 29 infants have been diagnosed with pertussis, 15 have been hospitalized and one has died.  Most infants who contract pertussis are infected by a family member or caretaker.  Providers are asked to:

  1. Encourage vaccination with Tdap for all patients that are eligible;
  2. Consider pertussis in the differential diagnosis of those with compatible symptoms;
  3. Please report any suspected or confirmed cases to the Epidemiology and Response Division at (505) 827-0006.  This number is available 24 hours to make reports and/or if you have any questions.
