Lovelace Health Plan Welcomes Dr. Denise Leonardi as Medical Director

Dr. Denise A. Leonardi, M.D., MBA, FAAFP, completed her undergraduate studies at Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich., and graduated with her Medical Doctorate from Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine, East Lansing, Mich. She completed a Family Medicine Residency in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Prior to joining Lovelace Health Plan, Dr. Leonardi served the community of Las Cruces both in private practice and as a member of various boards dedicated to health and medicine. She had worked for Lovelace from 1992 to 1998 as Las Cruces’ Medical Director, during which time she opened a satellite primary care clinic and launched a full-time urgent care clinic. Dr. Leonardi also was a part-time Health Plan Medical Director responsible for the southern region and for organ transplants.

Dr. Leonardi moved to New Mexico to fulfill her National Health Service Corps obligation at La Clinica de Familia in San Miguel, N.M., where she served as an Associate Medical Director from 1985 to 1988. She was in private practice from 1988 until 1992, when she was recruited by Lovelace Health System.

She left Lovelace Health System in 1998 and restarted her private practice. Dr. Leonardi has served in many different leadership roles at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces since 1988. She served as chair of family medicine, chair of bylaws committee, chair of credentials committee, and as medical director for case management and utilization management. She was on the steering committee for Triad’s opening of Mountain View Regional Medical Center. At Mountain View, she has served as physician advisor for case and utilization management, as chair of medicine, member and chair of the board of trustees, and chief of staff from May 2009 to March 2011. Leonardi was the president of the Doña Ana County Medical Society, meeting with local legislators on issues of access to care, GRT, and the difficulties in physician recruiting to rural communities. She is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
